Sékaly to study genetically engineering immune cells for HIV treatment

CWRU School of Medicine researcher and professor of pathology Rafick-Pierre Sékaly received an $11 million grant from the National Institutes of Health and will partner with Sangamo Therapeutics to study the possibility of eradicating HIV in people living with the virus. The strategy involves removing some of their immune cells, genetically engineering them and reinfusing them back into the body. The Center for AIDS Research member will start with a group of 30 patients later this summer, and the study will run about four years.
